Music and Philosophy Conference, London, 1-2 July 2011

The Royal Musical Association Music and Philosophy Study Group will be holding its first conference at the beginning of July, at King's College, London. The 'optional topic' - i.e., there are plenty of items that have little or nothing to do with it - is 'Opera and Philosophy'. Keynote speakers are Lydia Goehr, Gary Tomlinson, and Kendall Walton. I shall be giving a paper on representation in Schoenberg's Moses und Aron. Other topics range from Chinese opera and Chinese philosophy, through the phenomenology of echo in seventeenth-century opera, to Wagner as imagined by Alfred Roller and Mahler in one paper, and John Culshaw in another.
